Scarborough Donkeys Pass Health Checks
22nd May 2009
Scarborough’s beach donkeys are in fine shape following their annual health check.
Guests staying at Scarborough hotels over the Summer months will still be able to enjoy the traditional sight of donkey rides on the beach as the towns donkeys have passed their annual health checks with flying colours.
Donkey Sanctuary and officials from Scarborough Borough Council visited the area to make sure that the donkeys were fit, healthy and licensed to work for the Summer season.
Molly Lloyd, who is the sanctuary’s regional welfare officer, said:
“Scarborough has an excellent bunch of owners. The donkeys are in very good health. The Donkey Sanctuary believes there are almost 850 donkeys working on Britain’s beaches each year and works with beach donkey owners and local authorities to ensure donkeys remain happy in their work.”
Around 100 donkeys from Scarborough, Whitby and Filey were checked and whilst the checks were taking place the donkeys were judged for The Best Beach Donkey competition.
There are also other awards to be won including Best Stables, Best Operator and Best Group of Donkeys, which Filey won last year.
