VISITORS TO HOTELS IN SCARBOROUGH COULD SEE PLANS FOR 2ND CASINO IN SCARBOROUGH

Guests staying at an English Rose Hotel in Scarborough can read in the Scarborough Evening News today on how Scarborough could be home to a second Casino by the end of 2011 following House of Lords approval of a scheme, which will see eight, gambling venues built in towns across the UK.

Scarborough Council chiefs have started the process of inviting developers and operators to submit proposals for the development of a “small casino” with a minimum gaming area of 750 square metres or 896 square yards, with a maximum of 80 gaming machines with a jackpot of up to £4,000.

Cllr Tom Fox, leader of the council told the evening news: “Finally and after much debate in central government and hard work at a local level from the council and partner authorities, we can now move forward to the next stage of embracing this significant regeneration opportunity for Scarborough.

“We will be working towards finalising our criteria for any proposed casino development in Scarborough and aim to get the maximum possible regeneration benefit for the town.”

Once the criteria and policy amendments are in place, operators and developers will be invited to enter what is essentially a competition, to bring forward proposals for regeneration developments in the town.

“No specific location has been identified and the council will look to the expertise of the casino industry to identify the most suitable location and mix of development to meet the regeneration needs of the borough,” he said.

Other town’s chosen as locations for the small casinos are, Bath and north east Somerset, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lindsey, Luton, Swansea, Torbay and Wolverhampton.
