Lenny to play in the Cast of Othello at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre
30th Oct 2008
Comedian Lenny Henry will show his serious side, for visitors to Scarborough hotels at The Stephen Joseph Theatre when he takes on the role of Othello.
The star, who turned 50 this year, will make his stage acting debut in a production of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy on a national tour.
The production will stop off in Scarborough next March. Tickets go on sale in January.
Lenny Henry, who is one of the nation’s best-loved funnymen, said he was inspired to tackle the role 17 years ago when he made the film True Identity, in which his character attempted to play Othello.
He will play the lead role under the direction of Barrie Rutter, artistic director of Northern Broadsides, a group which gives regular performances for Scarborough hotel visitors.
The comedian, who has said in the past he was “slightly allergic to Shakespeare” after being put off at school, will kick off the tour at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds on February 14.
